larry williamsI love this paper. I’ve been to KW and it is a paradise! If I were younger. I would love to move there. My son has lived there for about thirteen yrs. He loves it too. Thank you so much for your service to the community & beyond.Shirley Griffin

Shirley GriffinHog Fish
Charles MeierSo there I was minding my own business and reading the Key west Citizen and Noticed on the Front page FEDs Debate requiring Bigger landed Hog Fish. As an avid Spear fisherman this debate leaves me with some Questions? The Feds want to Raise the size of Hog Fish from 12” to 18” this is a increase of 6” inches. And according to one of guys’ (Jim Atack,) A North Carolina Fisherman & advisory panel Member recommended to raise the size limit to 20, or 22” inches , this would be over a 10’ inch increase)
Here is the W.T.F. Portion of my Rant. I have lived here 20 years, and For the last 5 years, I have been spear fishing as my main hobby, and pastime, Not just for fun, but also for dinner. During that time, I have only ever shot ONE! Hog fish that was just a Hair over 19” … They’re just not here in our waters close to the Shore or at the Reef. I’m talking about the 30’ foot Range or less. This is the range that most of the people I know whom are free divers and spear fishermen like to play and hunt.
Now maybe in North Carolina shits a little different and the Hog Fish get that big. And Believe me, I support Big ass Hog fish, send them our way, I want bigger targets to shoot at. But, How Deep of water are they in? I was reading an article in a spear fishing Magazine years Back, and a guy was diving on Old Oil wells, and sunken wrecks in the North Carolina and Brought up what the article called HOGZILLA. A 24” Hog fish but if Memory serves me correct he was diving in or past the 100’ foot depth mark, way out of the range of your average Free diver. And this is Only 2” above what Mr. Atack’s proposed Step in the right direction is. Has he lost His Mind? ??? Or does he just not want us to get any hog Fish . If the Average size of Hog fish in North Carolina is 22” inches Maybe we need to go up that way and get some of there’s.
From my experience in the FL Keys our average is 14 – 17” inches. Especially in the waters I fish in. and if you limit out with 5 Hogs , that my friend is a good dinner.
in my opinion Jim needs to Keep his opinion in North Carolina, and out of the keys. If this passes it will stop Spear fishing, for Hog fish in the keys altogether and that is great if you want the entire keys to be a National Marine Sanctuary ? What are the people whom live here supposed to do? Our options are limited. whats Next, you want to raise the Size limit of Mangrove snappers to 20” inches also?
Continuing on, Spear Fishing accounts for only approximately 2, or 3% of the fish Taken. and Spear fishermen are some of the Most environmentally Friendly sportsman on the planet. Were actually Down visually verifying the Species that were hunting & selecting what’s for Dinner. I’m against a Raise in the size limit, But I would not be overly offended if you raised it to 14” inches. since that is the smallest I or my friends Shoot. and if you Want to give the Species a break, Do like you have done to everything else, give it a season, & lower the bag limit. This will be a win/Win for Tourist and locals alike.
my grandmother, rosa cervantes, had surgery in 1960s or 1970s and the key west citizen posted a picture of her and 14/15 children. how could i possibly get a copy of that picture? i am davie caerbert, born in key west. thank you for any help, davie
davie murawskiI have forward your request to the Key West Citizen.
CraigThanks, Craig Hollenback
all i what say is please deliver my paper on time.
Ruben R. MunozThere was an incident in either 1967 or 1968 that I have been trying to research to no avail
We were driving on N. Roosevelt when we saw a rather large crowd gathered on the side walk in front of Garrison
We stopped, walked across the street to see what they were looking at
Bite
There, hovering inches above the water, was something indescribable
You could only see a neon purple outline rather than the object it’s self
It was making ripples on the surface of the water and emitted a low frequency sound
It was chilling.
I have researched this in the archives to no avail
The next day there was a report that it was some sort of downed weather balloon or weather satellite. If it was ‘downed’ it suddenly rejuvenated it’s self because and vanished in the blink of an eye
Had I been the only witness it would have been said that I was delusional, however this ‘event’ was witnessed by
a rather large crowd
I would appreciate any feed back on this event if possible
It remains a mystery to me after all these years
I have no definitive date but only know this was in ’67 or ’68
Thank you
Julia SpencerJulia Spencer
Then it just sort of vanished
Having a subscription to the citizen for years I’ve been close to canceling many times with the liberal bias I see in the political cartoons and letters to the editor.
Brooks ThommesYour Monday addition of Charles Krauthammer? keep me from going through with this since i do depend on it for local news.
It was with great delight that I saw your endorsement for Romney this past weekend. I’m glad to see some one there is not drinking the Kool Aid.
i love this paper. helps me get caught up with my friends and what is going on in my fav place in this whole earth
cheriemazzengaI am trying to location a magazine that I foun d on my trip to the Keys. It was the citizen and Press (the edition I had was for seniors- Feb. 2012) but would like to know how I might obtain information on the small magazine. Thanks so much. I live in Miami, my sister lives in Key West.
louise w. brightAround Flag Day 1970 the newspaper at that time printed a photo of the Fogarty House with it’s large American Flag hanging off the upper porch.I lived there then and would love a copy of the photo if it is to be had.Oh those WERE the days.
Rick BlaisdellTo the Editor and Key West residents
-Our family has lived in Key West (probably settled most of it) for many generations and my great grand uncle is now the eldest living Conch remaining from the old generation. He is in his last months the doctor has not given him much longer to live
SO, I am humbly asking that you help me fulfill his last wish . He loved a girl very much when he was a young man her name was Shirley Griffen (guessing spelling) she lived at 309 United Street in Key West …most of our family lived on duval….he has not seen her in over 60 years (estimated) he is asking to see her or know someone from her family before he passes away. I realize this may be a tall and slighly impossibe order but it would let him rest in peace knowing what became of her.
Thanks so much for reading. Our family thanks you.

saraHi,
I was wondering if you can help…? My now husband and I travelled to Key West last August and got married on Smather’s beach on 16th. I was looking to obtain a copy of the paper which was printed on the day we got married. Is there anyway that I would be able to purchase this and have this sent over to the UK? If this is possible, can you can let me know the cost, payment method and rough timeframe for delivery?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards, Veronica
Veronica BrownAre you hiring?
TomI’m looking for an article regarding a Buzzard attack on my boat while fishing West of Sprigger.
Someone said it appeared in your paper but so far I haven’t been able to find out when.
Thank You, Paul Kaub
Paul KaubI am looking for an obituary for an uncle that passed away in the Keys. His last residence was Big Pine Key. Would you have it? Do you cover all of the keys or just Key West?
His name was Walter M. Thomas, died 2/21/1994.
Thank you.
Kim IezziOn the corner of Eaton and Whitehead, I understand, a month ago one concrete curb was replaced up to the stop sign. The area up to 30 feet from the sign which is normally painted yellow to show an invalid parking space has been left unpainted so visitors, including me, can get $35 parking violations. Not everyone gets a ticket but cars have been parked there all week and not on any of the other corners that are painted yellow.
Now I’ve got to follow standard family policy and figure out a way to not spend 20X the fine ($700). That basically means no scuba diving for the next two years and limited restaurant visits.

OPINION
“Removing Keys trees frightening proposition”, page 4a,
There is an error in your article where you cited Mark Hedden as the identifier of the Cuban Vireo. Mark was one of the 5 who observed the bird but only one of us knew what it was and that was Carl Goodrich.
Carl and several others were trying to find a singing bird that none of them knew what it was. After over 20 minutes of searching with no visual results Carl played some vireo songs and when he got to Cuban Vireo the bird popped up. At this point Mark who had joined the group and luckily was in the right place at the right time photographed the bird.
Immediately upon seeing the picture Carl said Cuban Vireo. He was the only one of us who knew the identity.
Check with Mark and he will verify the facts but as this is a first record for the ABA area a correction is in order.
Murray GardlerWe recently visited Key West and just want to thank the people who have the rainbow flag posted over their businesses and hotels. This is a good way for us to know where to avoid so our children can stay safe. This was a great idea for the city to allow this.
StanleyMy daddy lives in the florida keys as far as i know. I haven’t seen or heard a word from him in almost 18 years. I miss him and would like to re connect with him. He is married to Peggy Cook Walls. She and my father have retited from the Navy. Please help me find him.
JONNY MAE WALLSWhat can be done or who can we put pressure on to make US1 safer? Just recently there was yet ANOTHER head on crash where multiple people were air lifted. At certain areas on US1 there are “rumble” bumps that are either embedded into the white line or grooves that have been carved into the road. GREAT!!! But that does not solve the head on problem because BOTH of these warning systems are on the outside to warn against a driver running off the road. Why can’t these grooves be put into the center line the entire length of the highway where there is one lane each direction? This is a common warning system that is used in the roads of Northern Wisconsin and they have seen a dramatic decrease in head on crashes from people falling asleep or just looking out their windows and drifting over the center lane. Even the US Dept of Transportation has found that these center lane rumble strips can reduce head on crashes up to 60%. Here is a link to the US Dept of Transportation on the subject of center line rumble stips , their safety and how they don’t cause any additional wear on the roads:
https://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/roadway_dept/pavement/rumble_strips/safety.cfm
I have seen on US1 that there are center line reflectors or bumps but those are spaced so far apart they do not effectively alert the driver they have crossed the center line. The warning grooves need to be constant. Heck I have passed many of slow drivers over these areas and never felt my tires go over the bumps thus the need for “constant” warning grooves.
I find it so shocking that with as much traffic that the Florida Keys experiences and the high number of head on crashes we see that a more focused effort on warning drivers of crossing the center line has not been made. It is time that we stop seeing people needlessly killed because a drunk driver, a drowsy driver or a distracted driver simply wonders over the center line. Lets face it, it is the keys and people drive not by looking out their front window, they drive by looking out their side window at our beautiful landscape.
Please lets make a push to make our road safer and have these “Milled Rumble Strips” put into US1.
Thank you
